"The Colgate Comedy Hour" was a big budget comedy spectacular featuring some of the top names in show business. It ran opposite the "Ed Sullivan Show" on Sunday nights, thus making it NBC's first sucessful attempt at counterprogramming against "Ed Sullivan".

"The Colgate Comedy Hour" was the first commercial series to originate from Hollywood. It also included the first network color telecast in November of 1953.

The show included big name hosts and other principals, such as Abbott and Costello, who appeared about once a month.
