Your furniture is suited to an indoor or outdoor life, year round. It
is shipped natural and untreated. It can then be stained or left in
its natural condition. Staining and other treatments tend to add
longevity to your furniture, particularly for the outdoor pieces.
It is perfectly acceptable to stain your furniture after several years
of weathering or immediately following your purchase. This means you
can wait to decide if you keep the natural, graceful gray.
We recognize that there are many people who wish to preserve the look
of unfinished cedar. In this case, we suggest using a wood preservative.
Preparation: The correct preparation is the key for stains to
adhere. The preparations we suggest ensure the wood’s porousness, which
is desirable because the wood’s grain is revealed. These preparations
also ensure that the wood is clean and dry when it is stained.
The Protection of Property: We recommend that you use a drop
cloth to protect any surfaces you many be working on. If you’re inside,
ensure adequate ventilation.
Weather: In general, try to work on the furniture when
temperatures range from 50° to 85° F. Humidity should be below 80%. If
the furniture is outdoors during the staining process, it should be
protected from the elements. Finally, abide by any particulars on the
stain or paint label.
Sand or Pre-Wet your Furniture.
To Pre-Wet: Unless you have a power washer, get the garden hose
or a pump sprayer out. Thoroughly soak the piece. Wait 4 to 5 drying
days before you stain.
If you prefer, the market offers detergents specialized for cleaning
your furniture.
To Sand: You may sand your furniture by hand. This light sanding
should be done across all surfaces of the piece. Any loose wood fibers
or dust should be removed by brushing.
Choosing A Finish
Stain or Paint? Painting or staining is both possible with cedar
furniture. They may enhance your furniture and ensure its longevity.
With either, carefully consider your color choice and how you will be
using the piece. Paints and stains are usually interior or exterior
specific.
Stains come in many colors and are recommended over paints as it allows
you to see the grain of the wood because it penetrates the wood.
Staining will also last longer than paint as paint will chip after
aging.
Painting is another option for your furniture. Be mindful of your
existing color schemes, but we’ve seen nearly every color work. We
recommend using semi-gloss latex paint instead of oil, as the wood
maintains its internal moisture balance with the latex.
Execution
Color Check: It’s always best to do a color test of the color
that you want to use on the underside of your furniture first.
Applying a Finish: Separate parts of the furniture from the
whole. For instance: remove any drawers from their dresser.
Stir your paint/stain and apply the first coat. Begin by staining the
lower portions of the piece, working your way through the sides to the
top. Let it dry. The product coverage depends on the wood’s porosity,
grade and texture. A second coat will guarantee a richer color depth
and enhance the longevity of the stain.
A Final Touch: A coat of primer and a light sanding will complete the
process.
Specifics: The tapered ends of the furniture are left as a
rougher finish and are usually slightly darker in color. To alter this
effect, try either of the following.
1. Sand the tapered ends down to an equally smooth finish. Then stain
entire piece.
2. Stain the piece with a first coat, except for the tapered ends. For
the second coat, stain the entire piece.

Northern White and Western Red Cedar are some of the most sought-after
woods that are ideal for many outdoor and indoor uses. It is a fine
grained wood that is durable and resistant to rotting and insects.
Because cedar is a top choice for carefree living, it can be left
natural or it can be painted or stained to match any decor.
Left untreated, both Western Red and Northern White Cedar will weather
to a beautiful soft silver gray. Untreated cedar is natural and
pleasing, however, the wood is porous and over the long term may become
discolored if left in damp or shaded areas. A 20 percent solution of
household bleach in water with one ounce of detergent per gallon will
usually remove the stain. Even after years of exposure, cedar can be
refinished to its natural bright clean appearance.
Many folks prefer to allow their cedar furniture to age naturally
outdoors. Over time the color will weather to a handsome silver gray
highlighted by darker streaks, and the grain of the wood will become
slightly raised.
For protection that helps enhance and maintain wood’s natural color,
Thompsons Seal Clear Wood Protector gives you beautiful protection
against damage from water and sun. This also provides a mildew
resistant coating. It’s oil enriched formula provides long lasting
protection. Wood must be clean and dry prior to application. Not
recommended for application over previously painted or stained wood.
If you would like to preserve the freshly sanded cedar with some added
color, we recommend that you use two coats of stain with a UV inhibitor
such as Sikkins. Every second year you might re-apply a coat of stain
to freshen the finish. Little or no sanding preparation or primer is
needed when you use a stain. Stain is breathable and will repel
moisture, therefore, no blistering or peeling.
Well dried cedar accepts paint fine but is not recommended. There are
some many stains with great colors and it is easy to apply.
If you decide to paint cedar, the natural color and grain of the wood
will be concealed. So many great colors are now available to accent
your decor. Our furniture is also popular with artists who paint
flowers, natural scenes, or whimsical patterns right on the furniture.
If you love getting creative with a paintbrush, check out our
a blank canvas just waiting for your artistic touch.
Follow the directions on the manufacturer’s product for the best
application methods.

Cedar is the natural choice because of its beauty, practicality and
durability. We use only the finest cedar to create furniture that lasts
for generations. It is naturally resistant to decay, insect and weather
damage. Because of this superior resistance, cedar is frequently used
for outdoor fencing, and siding on homes. Cedar has an exceptionally
high strength-to-weight ratio, which means that it is both durable and
easy to move about. It does not shrink or warp as many other woods
commonly do. Unlike pressure-treated wood furniture, we use no chemical
preservatives that may be harmful to your family’s health.
We use two types of cedar — Northern White Cedar for our indoor and
outdoor furniture for its creamy white color and enduring strength,
and Western Red Cedar for our outdoor garden products such as arbors
and trellises. When left untreated, over time white cedar weathers
gracefully to a silvery gray, or it can be stained to match any décor.
All cedar log furniture is subject to the natural process of checking
as the wood “seasons”. Checking occurs as wood releases moisture across
or through the annual growth rings and it does not affect the
structural performance or integrity of the wood.
Northern White Cedar is the superior choice for furniture because of
its beauty, practicality and versatility.
Northern White Cedar:
All log furniture is subject to the natural process of checking
(cracks or splits in wood). Checking happens as wood releases moisture,
and normally occurs across or through the annual growth rings. It is
the usual result of wood seasoning. Checking occurs only on the surface
of the wood, and does not affect the structual performance or integrity
of the wood.

Many people consider the early 1900′s to be the greatest period in American furniture making history.
In reaction to the highly ornate, fussy, and oftentimes rather useless furniture styles of the
Victorian era, the Arts and Crafts movement came like a breath of fresh air into the homes
of America, turning them from stuffy museums into places of light and simplicity, where folks could
really live! Function was the number one concern of the furniture makers of this time, also called
the Craftsman period, and chairs, benches, tables, beds all feature plain, comfortable lines and
beautiful wood. The famous adirondack chair fits very neatly into this moment in time, a perfect
example of the Craftsman principles of superior form and function. No wonder it has been one of the
most sought-after pieces of furniture in the U.S. for more than 100 years.
The story of Adirondack chair begins with a fellow named Thomas Lee who owned a summer home in
Westport, New York, beside Lake Champlain. He and his family enjoyed vacationing there, but they
needed some outdoor furniture for the garden. In 1903, Thomas Lee decided to make his own. Early
20th century families really enjoyed their vacations, and East Coast families commonly left the
cities they lived in to spend a few weeks, or even months at some nearby country resort. The fathers
would typically commute back and forth to work from the summer place, and this leisurely and happy
arrangement is nicely documented in semi-autobiographical works of the era such as Life
with Father by Clarence Day, and the Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace. When
Thomas Lee set about designing some chairs for his summer home, his primary thought was for
the ease and comfort of his family and he was determined to get it just right. He got some boards
and began putting them together in various arrangements, testing them on his family to see
how they rated comfort-wise. He eventually settled on a deeply-angled, low-seated and spacious
plan constructed of eleven pieces of wood cut from a single board. It featured wide armrests, which
no doubt the family enjoyed as they serve almost as a mini table top – a good place to rest
a tall, cool glass of lemonade on a hot summer afternoon. Good thinking, Mr. Lee!
These commodious outdoor chairs might have never been used for anyone but the Lee family’s enjoyment,
had not Mr. Bunnell come along. Harry Bunnell was a friend and hunting buddy of Thomas Lee’s, and he ran a small
carpentry shop. Harry was looking for a way to bring in some extra cash during the long East
Coast winters, and when he saw the chairs that Thomas had put together, he had a bright idea.
Thomas Lee lent the chair design plans to Harry Bunnell who hunkered down in this workshop and
began turning out a number of the chairs, carpentered in hemlock and basswood. In 1905, Bunnell
patented the chair plan, and at this time, he called his creation the Westport chair, not the
Adirondack chair. Should you ever come across one of Harry Bunnell’s original Westport chairs
at an antiques fair or specialty shop, identification of authenticity is made simpler by the fact
that each original Westport chair is stamped with the patent date and the words H. C. Bunnell
across the backrest. A Westport chair, in fair condition with the original rusty-brown
or green stain
is worth some $3000 in today’s antiques market. Look out, too, for Bunnell’s variations on the
original Westport chair plan including rocking chairs, tete-a-tetes, lounges, etc. The laid-back
style of the plan lent itself well to several kinds of seating furniture, and we like the quote from
the one-time director of the Adirondack Museum, Craig Gilborn, who said,
“There’s no end to the ingenuity of guys working their way through a long winter in a
wood shop.”
Eventually, the wide appeal of these chairs lead to other furniture makers creating similar chairs
of their own, and over time, the entire genre of the low-seated, slat-backed, slanted chairs
came to be called Adirondack chairs.
Adirondack Chairs Today
In modern times, the adirondack chair has become synonymous with times and places of respite. They
are extremely popular for use as beach furniture, mountain cabin furniture and, like the original,
rustic lakeside seating. Adirondack chairs are available in a variety of woods including cedar,
redwood and maple. You can choose from natural wood, various finishes, and paint hues from
forest green to neon pink – whatever suits your personal style. We have even seen versions of the
chair made of recycled plastic or metals. Many modern Adirondack-type
chairs feature a more rounded back, which may be somewhat taller or shorter than that of the original
Westport chair. Contemporary furniture makers continue to take interesting liberties with the basic
styling with this beloved piece of American furniture, but all styles should feature the swayed
back, which Thomas Lee originally designed to better accommodate the irregular land levels of
mountain landscape. Some folks like to add cushions to their outdoor furniture, but with
a well-made Adirondack chair, it isn’t required. It should be comfortable as is. Some people who
just can’t get enough of adirondack furniture use it indoors as well as out!

Caring for your Adirondack Chair
The principles of the Craftsman era of the early 1900′s were built
on the excellent belief that things should last, that household
items should be able to endure the wear and tear of daily living.
Isn’t that the polar opposite of today’s throw-away culture! Nearly
all of us are affected by the concept that we can buy cheap stuff,
expect it to break, toss it in the garbage, and replace it with more
cheap stuff. This idea may extend to how we feel about appliances,
dinnerware, furniture…you name it. The result is the unfortunate
state of our landfills! But, it doesn’t have to be this way. By choosing
your household goods carefully, you can opt for natural materials that
will last for years and years, and which, when they do decompose, will
simply go back into the earth like the leaves off the trees do every
winter. Now, isn’t that a better plan for the happiness of our planet?
How this relates to outdoor furniture is that if you shop for good
quality wooden furniture, as opposed to faux-woods or plastic, you know
you are buying items that will give your family years of pleasure, and will
not end up outlasting the pyramids, sitting in a dump somewhere. Save up
and buy the best quality you can. Most of us so treasure the time we
spend outdoors. It really is a necessary thing these days, being out of doors,
when so much of life is spent inside, working. We think that every person
deserves a really comfortable resting spot in their yard, and we know that
we’re not alone in this thought. People who buy Adirondack chairs are securing themselves a lasting and simple comfort.
Northern White and Western Red Cedar are some of the top choices for quality
outdoor furniture making, because of their durability. The wood can be left
in its natural state, slowly maturing to a soft, rustic grey, or it can be
painted or stained to make a particular statement in the garden. If left
untreated, the porous wood may become discolored if left in a shady or
damp spot in the yard. Some folks use a 20 percent solution of
household bleach in water with one ounce of detergent per gallon to remove
the stain. Cedar can be refinished
to its natural bright appearance even if the furniture has been
subjected to exposure for many years.
Others like to coat the natural wood with a protective seal such
as Thompsons Seal Clear Wood Protector which prevents water and sun
damage, and also, mildew. An even older technique is simply to rub
the wood frequently with olive oil which is a natural preservative
and gives a soft, rich glow to the wood, while at the same time being
very kind to the environment. With just a little care, you’ll be sitting
pretty for years in your Adirondack chair!

Just about everybody has heard of the idea of greening the home environment by now. Replacing light bulbs with the new energy efficient ones. Cleaning with good old vinegar and
baking soda instead of detergents. Choosing glass and pottery housewares instead of plastic ones. Converting an unused lawn into a food-producing family garden. That Americans are moving in
all sorts of new, exciting green directions may not be news to you, but there are other headlines appearing with more frequency these days that deserve the attention of anyone who wants their
home to be a safe abode – a really good place to live!
We’re talking about the news that the furnishings you spend the most time around may contribute to ill-health. Most commercial sofas, armchairs, tables, mattresses and other furnishings are treated
with chemicals that scientists and researchers are now linking to disorders of the brain, respiratory system, digestive system and other major functional systems of the human body. Memory loss and brain damage,
skin rashes, pleurisy, asthma, cancer, birth defects…who knew our couches and beds could be so scary?
More and more these days, we are meeting people with a disorder termed Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS). Maybe
these are friends or loved ones who are speaking up and explaining to us that their health is being sapped by an overload of toxins in their daily living environment. Maybe the person with MCS is your precious child, or
even yourself, and you are currently researching non toxic furniture because greening your home has just become a must, not just an interesting option. Allergies, autoimmune conditions and MCS know no social or economic
boundaries. And, yet, we’ve noticed that most non toxic furniture is priced as though only the wealthy have health concerns. If green furniture price tags are making you swoon, if you feel like there are no affordable options
for your family when it comes to creating a non toxic living space, we hope you will be pleasantly surprised by what we’re about
to show you.
Our Untreated Bare Wood Cedar Furniture Is Non-Toxic And Family-Budget-Friendly
In addition to offering rock bottom prices on our cedar furniture, we are eager to let you know that our furnishings are absolutely untreated with chemicals. They can
be left in their natural state and will slowly weather over time to a soft, pearl grey. If you have been seeking a non toxic sofa, bed, chair, table, futon or other functional
piece, please take a good look at what we can offer to you.
Non Toxic Living Room Furniture |
Let’s get down to the basics of what you really need in a living room to be comfortable. Most families need a sofa, a chair or two and perhaps a table of some kind. We are able to meet your needs for these basic pieces with
our non toxic, chemical free cedar furnishings. Our Non Toxic Futon Frame provides the framework you’ll be building your safe sofa
or couch on, or check out our 48″ Settee, 4′ Settee or
6′ Settee for a different sofa choice. Rocking sofas provide
a very comforting way to take it easy and we have a tremendous variety of Non-Toxic Coffee Tables and Occasional Tables to complete the picture.
When it comes to comfortable, chemical-free chairs, consider the time-tested appeal of the classic Adirondack Chair which we currently
have in 12 different styles. We have beautiful rocking chairs, too! Compare our prices to those you’ll find at other cedar furniture websites
and you will quickly see that we are offering you the most affordable way to begin refurnishing your home in a healthier way.
Don’t forget the kids. We have great non toxic children’s furniture. Check out our Junior Log Chair Set.
But What About Comfort?
You’re right. The most comfortable indoor furniture is made up of 2 components: the first is a well-built, sturdy frame and the second is soft cushioning.
We’re providing you with the quality framework for your new sofas and armchairs here with our non-toxic cedar furniture, and then you have several options open
to you for adding the cushions that will complete the picture. Consider these ideas:
your cushions, and purchase organic fabrics to upholster the cushions yourself. Throw pillows can be stuffed with organic filler material.
you to provide the fabric for the project, so you can shop for organic cloth, find a bargain and keep your costs low. Or, an upholsterer with
green leanings may just have organic upholstery options for you to choose from.
Where To Buy Non Toxic, Organic Fabrics and Upholsteries
Sometimes, finding organic cloth isn’t as easy as it ought to be, but we hope that these links will get you started in your search
for non toxic fabric that fits your budget:
Non Toxic Bedroom Furniture |
Major concerns about toxins in the bedroom tend to revolve around the drastic chemicals commercial mattresses are soaked in. If you wake up feeling sick and worn out in the morning, it just might be the
result of sleeping with your face against flame retardants and other toxic chemicals. If you suspect that your bed is bringing you sickness rather than rest, don’t overlook the frame your
mattress is resting on.
Organic mattresses are expensive, though some choosy shoppers have found ways to cut costs by having a large piece of natural latex foam rubber cut to fit their bed frame instead
of going the route of springs and coils. Whatever the case, you will be making a serious investment if you have realized you need to
replace your mattress because of MCS, a chronic illness, concern for your children or simply for a better night’s sleep. Start with a non-toxic bed to be sure
you’re really rooting out all the chemicals you can.
Our Bare Wood Futon Frame is a great place to start dreaming up your alternative, healthy bed.
In addition to this, we have unfinished, chemical-free cedar log beds in Twin, Double, Queen and King sizes.
These are beautifully-made, eco-friendly beds that are built to last for years of happy sleeping.
Our non toxic bedroom furniture collection includes incredibly handsome Dressers, Armoires and Chests. We’ve got some pretty little Cedar Mirrors as well so that you can see your improved health in your
own happy face whenever you’d like!
Who Sells Organic Mattresses?
For ready-made organic mattresses, you might like to visit these websites:
Most organic mattresses are made up of a combination of cotton and wool. For those with wool allergies or a need
to purchase a wool-free mattress, a doctor’s order is required in some states for people who wish to purchase a Vegan
organic mattress.
Non Toxic Dining Room Furniture |
Concerns about toxins in the kitchen and dining room are especially important as these
are the areas of the home where food is most commonly prepared and eaten. Tables may be
coated or finished with toxic stains, paints, or chemical treatments. You’ll have peace
of mind with our Non Toxic Solid Top Dining Table.
Made of beautiful, natural cedar wood, this is a table that will last
your family for years.
We have a large selection of non toxic dining chairs and stools to go with your table.
For small dining areas, consider our Five Piece Bistro Set.
If you have always favored upholstered dining chairs, please refer to
the websites we’ve listed above that sell organic fabrics. You can make
your own organic seat cushions if you are crafty, or hire a local seamstress
to custom craft them for you.
Non Toxic Outdoor Furniture |
All of us wander outside for fresh air and sunshine, for repose and health.
The last thing we want is to mar the wholesomeness of the great outdoors
with outdoor furniture that is off-gassing chemicals into our environment.
We offer you a tremendous selection of beautiful, quality, non-toxic outdoor furniture
that you and your family can feel really good about using.
And, we haven’t forgotten about that special family member – the family
dog. Don’t miss our log dog beds and
log pet feeders. Greening your
dog and protecting him from toxic chemicals where he sleeps and eats is
a very loving gesture you can make to ensure his well-being.
What Is All This Talk About Toxic Furniture, Anyway?
Until the mid-19th century, there wasn’t any such thing as toxic furniture. A chair was a chair. A bed was a bed. The idea
of harmfulness just didn’t enter into the picture. It was the invention of chemical fabric dyes in the Victorian era, government
concern for fire safety and, finally, manufacturers’ concern for product longevity that combined to fill American homes with
furnishings that scientists are now saying are making us sick. Chemical dyes, flame retardants, fungicides, formaldehyde…who would
want to sit on or sleep in these things if given a choice? It’s not necessary to place any blame. It’s only important that modern people
learn what we didn’t know 20 or 30 years ago – that many chemicals cause adverse effects on the human body, and that daily exposure to
even small doses of these chemicals can damage vital organs and important bodily functions.
Most frequently mentioned in the coverage of toxic furniture are VOCs – volatile organic compounds which off-gas from new furniture.
Once upon a time, people liked to brag about that new car smell. Now they drive around with all their windows open trying to let
the fumes dissipate over time. Chances are, if you purchase conventionally made and upholstered furniture, it will be off-gassing
in your home, exposing you and your family to substances that, it turns out, are quite dangerous. You will not have this experience
with our cedar wood furniture, which is untreated with chemicals of any kind.
Is your commercial sofa making you sick? That’s not for us to say, but we do believe the recent findings regarding the chemicals commonly
used in textile and home furnishing manufacture, and we want our customers to have affordable options for avoiding potential health harms.
That’s important to us, and we hope that the information and choices we’re providing here will make it possible for you to start
making your home a healthier, more people-friendly place.

American bathrooms tend to fall into two common genres: sterile white or
faintly funky. Many bathrooms are a bland landscape of white and beige. Others
may feature a bold area of color tile, but lack a harmonious middle step that
integrates bold color into the rest of the room.
One of Cape Cod Treasure Chest’s valued customers came to us with a bathroom
that met this exact description. Lots of white tile, but then an interesting
lower border of small emerald green tiles. The customer decided it was time to
take this bi-color scheme to a whole new level by adding special shower tile
and backsplash tile elements that both break up the monotony and bring amazing
new life to the room.

Shower Tile Ideas
As you can see from the accompanying photo, this customer is working on
incorporating our decorative nautical tiles
and fish tiles
into the formerly white space in their tile shower.
Rather than approching this project with a regimented, checkerboard mindset,
the customer has wisely chosen to scatter these gorgeous shower tiles in a
random pattern amongst the white spaces. Shower tile should be treated like
pieces of waterproof art. You don’t need to install them all in a row! It’s
going to be much more interesting to have these underwater scenes peeking out
here and there like windows into a seascape.
You will also note that the customer has elected to mix up the shower tile
sizes they are using. Our ceramic tile designs come in sizes as small as
4″ x 4″ to as grand as 12″ x 12″. By mixing tile sizes, the effect is very
natural.
Cape Cod Treasure Chest’s bathroom tile designs are rich in color and are
doing a beautiful job of picking up the bold color that is already present in
the lower border of this tile shower.
As you can see, when the grouting is finished and the walls are given a
scrub, this tile shower is going to glitter with interest, color, and
character.
Backsplash Tile Ideas

The above photo shows how the customer has continued the nautical theme
with the backsplash tile area above the bathroom sink. Here, because the tile
space is limited to two rows, the installation of the tile is a bit more
uniform in design. The creativity here is in the varied choice of beautiful
ceramic tile designs. A palm tree here, a sand dollar there. You can imagine
that standing at this bathroom sink will now have a new element of pleasure for
both the homeowners and guests.
Bathroom tile ideas are as unique as individual people. While the nautical
theme tends to lend itself so well to rooms that focus on water, your
personal taste might dictate that ceramic tiles featuring fruit designs,
flower designs,
or vivid birds
will be most appealing in your home’s best bathroom.

Why Cape Cod Treasure Chest’s Ceramic Tile Design Collection is Special
If you go to your neighborhood home and bathroom decor chain store, chances are
your ceramic tile design choices will be limited to mass-produced, generic
pieces. Our tiles, by contrast, are designed and handpainted by skilled artists
and artisans. Each tile is a little bit different, and this is what makes them
works of art that truly deserve a place of honor in your bathroom.
Our customers tell us that we are their favorite place to shop for ceramic
tiles because our designs are so realistic. Look at the tropical fish tile
shown at right. Doesn’t it look like the fish are swimming in a blissful, watery
world? If your hope is to create a spa-like retreat in your home’s bathroom,
we have a glorious selection of exquisite tiles in a variety of motifs that
will make it possible for you to create the exact effect you want.
Installing Ceramic Tile from Cape Cod Treasure Chest
Our ceramic tiles have been designed for multi-purpose use. Each tile comes
with a removable cork backing – this makes them suitable for use as coasters
and trivets. However, if you are about to install shower tile or backsplash
tile in your bathroom, simply follow these easy directions to remove the
cork backing:

Restaurant meals are out. Dining in is in! With a lot of common sense, many Americans are opting to serve up better, more
affordable meals at home instead of depending on takeout and restaurant meals these days, and this means families are spending more
time in their kitchens. We think this is a positive and healthy trend, and because the kitchen is coming back into style as the hub
of the home, homeowners are starting to look at their kitchens with a more critical eye. The kitchens in most modern homes are as
vanilla as a sugar cookie. The more time you spend in your kitchen, the more important it starts to seem that this space reflects you!
Cape Cod Treasure Chest customer, Robin Boan, decided it was time to add her own personal touch to the plain, white kitchen of her beachfront
home. She created a kitchen tile mural over the sink and another little kitchen tile mosaic over the stove. The results are beautiful to see
and loaded with personality:

Here’s a closeup shot of the kitchen tile mosaic design over the stove. Robin chose colorful ceramic tiles from our Fish Tiles collection
and this is in keeping with the seaside setting of her family’s home:

Robin says,”These pictures also include the magnet
that you sent me in which I took the magnet off and used the tile over the stove. The little 4″ tile was a great starting point for a wonderful back
splash. My daughter walked in the beach condo today and said “Mom, you have vision. It’s beautiful!”. Needless to say I was quite pleased.
We share Robin’s pride in a job well done! Adding a kitchen tile mural or kitchen tile mosaic brings new and vibrant life to a once-bland
space and lets the head cook of the household make a personal statement about their joy in cooking. All across America, kitchens are starting
to be where the real action is, and they deserve to be both beautiful and functional! Take a look at your own kitchen today and ask yourself
if it looks like a place people would enjoy spending time. Tile mosaics and murals are an affordable way to go from drab to dynamic in your
kitchen.
A Firepit With Fabulous Ceramic Tile Flair!
In parts of the country where the weather is fine year-round, or where summer days are just too good to waste indoors, many families enjoy
an outdoor living or cooking space. Firepits create a focal point for relaxing with family and friends on the patio or in the garden,
relishing a great meal, or sipping a hot drink as the stars come out overhead. Valued customer, Cynda, personalized her firepit by adding
a ceramic tile to it that brings back happy memories of her trips to Key West. Look at what a wonderful, creative job she did!

Cynda says,”We bought this fire pit with 8×8 brown tiles. I wanted to add my personal touch so thought adding tile pieces from places we have vacationed or visited would be a great conversation piece. I love my first tile. We travel to Key West often. Just looking at it brings back so many good and happy memories. My next purchase will be the Conch Shell Tile!! Thanks so much for the quick delivery, no shipping cost and a hand painted tile of very high quality. We Love It!!”
The tile used in Cynda’s firepit project is from our exciting Lighthouse Tile collection. We think it’s fascinating that
a customer can make a momento of her favorite vacation by incorporating a ceramic tile into an everyday object – something to her remind her of happy times and put her in a good mood.
In addition to the fish and lighouse tiles shown on this page, we have a special collection of really exquisite Cafe and Gourmet themed tiles in our
miscellaneous tile section, ideal for bringing a touch of glowing color to an indoor or outdoor kitchen. Let us show you just a few to spark your imagination:
It’s a treat for us to see the remarkable things customers are doing with our ceramic tiles in their kitchens and outdoor living spaces. Because the kitchen
is the place good food is prepared with love for your family, it deserves to be the liveliest place in the home. The essential ingredient of great cooking
is creativity. You master the basics – how to cook rice properly, how to make a fresh salad, lump-free mashed potatoes, spaghetti sauce with zing. As you gain
confidence, you begin to riff on basic recipes like an artistic jazz musician. You discover that fresh herbs turn a plain soup into a dish fit for a king and
that pizza crust made from scratch may just be the best thing you’ve ever tasted in your life. Before you know it, you may be trying your hand at Greek dolmas,
chow mein and enchilladas! The kitchen becomes your thinking place, your dreaming and creating place. It’s only fitting that your surroundings should
match the brightness of your ideas, and we love the way a few carefully chosen decorative tiles turn a blank space into your space.
Have you used Cape Cod Treasure Chest’s decorative ceramic tiles in your kitchen or another room in your home? We’d love to hear about it!

Customer Laurie Gilson sent us these terrific snaps of the newest addition to
Florida’s famous Kanapaha Gardens a sensory garden for children, complete with
a decorative tile wall. The long rock wall is full of interest and features whole
and fragmented pieces of the decorative tiles found here at Cape Cod Treasure Chest.

The new exhibit in the children’s garden invites little hands to explore, to experience the differing
textures, shapes and designs. In addition to the decorative tiles, small pieces of statuary and outsize crystals
have been incorporated, creating a sense of surprise and magic at every turn.
Kanapaha Gardens is open to the public and features 1 1/2 miles of paved walkways, winding
through 24 different botanical collections. You’ll find rose gardens, rock gardens,
Asian gardens, water gardens and even a hummingbird garden. The gardens are wheelchair
accessible, with plenty of places to rest and admire the surroundings and it’s a wonderful
place to take a picnic on a sunny afternoon.
We think Kanapaha Gardens is a must-visit spot if you’re ever
in Gainesville, Florida, but, why not create your own decorative tile wall a little
closer to home? It’s a project that offers almost unlimited scope for your imagination
and creativity!

Using Garden Tiles In Rock Walls For Added Interest
Visitors to the gardens of the Mediterranean, Central America or the American
Southwest are certain to come home with an impression of gleaming decorative
tiles used in all kinds of unusual ways, adding color to expanses of brick,
adobe and stone. Ceramic is a natural material that lends itself readily to
a botanical setting, and even a few well chosen tiles add touches of color
that can transform the simplest garden into a memorable place to spend time.
Decorative tiles can be set in cement or weather-proof grout, or you might
decide to securely embed fragments of them in gravel or soil. Following a
regimented pattern in adding tiles to a wall will result in a planned, formal
look, but our favorite designs take a freer, more random approach.

Try taking half a dozen tiles and breaking them into pieces. Then toss them gently into
the garden wall setting to see where they fall naturally. This can spark your
basic ideas for how to create a broadly-patterned mosaic with perhaps a little
fish here, a little flower there, a bird amongst the pebbles or a kitty face
peeking out over a favorite rock! Kanapaha Gardens has done a wonderful job
in creating this unexpected finished design in their decorative tile wall by
scattering many different kinds of tiles far and wide throughout the exhibit. Isn’t
it more interesting to look at than if they’d set their tiles like soldiers all
in a row?

Rock walls may be build vertically straight, as in a retaining wall or
planter in which plants may be grown much like in a planter box, but don’t overlook
the idea of a more free-form rockery. In a rock garden, stones and soil may be
built up like a pyramid or terrace, with decorative tiles and other elements
set in wherever they look best. The glossy feel and raised designs of many of our
tiles beg to be touched, and the gorgeous colors provide needed contrast to the
dusty hues of rock and stone.
And, why not go one better by tucking in rock
garden plants? Succulents like hens-and-chickens will create their own secondary
patterns in the garden wall as they self-propagate, or try tiny flowering alpines
for a winsome look. Perhaps best of all, you can engage two more senses – smell
and taste – by adding small edible herbs to the decorative wall. A pluck
of flowering chives, a patch of savory thyme, a plot of spicy oregano amongst
the rocks and decorative tiles will invite your garden visitors to see, smell,
taste and touch. Add a wind chime nearby and all 5 senses will be honored in this
special corner of your yard.

In these busy times, so many people can benefit from coming across a quiet
corner to sit in, to be in, to admire beauty and soak up the sunshine. Isn’t
there a spot in your garden just waiting for you to turn it into such a haven
for yourself and your loved ones? We invite you to browse our huge collection
of garden tiles to get you dreaming about transforming
a space in your yard into a sanctuary for the senses. Don’t see something you’re
looking for? Please, do contact us. We can find almost any garden tile design you’d like
and we’d love to help you start creating your own decorative tile wall!

Customer Jim McCausey of Michigan has worked magic with our ceramic
penguin tiles for a very lucky little girl! With his skill as a woodworker, Jim designed this one-of-a-kind
toy chest for his granddaughter, with a colorful tile set in each side of the chest. The finished project looks as if it
came straight from Santa’s workshop, doesn’t it? Any child would be thrilled to receive such a jolly gift.
These days, too many children’s items are made of unappealing plastic. What a difference it makes when some caring
adult takes the time to thoughtfully prepare a child’s living and playing space with beautiful and useful furnishings and
playthings made of trusty materials like wood. Handmade wooden articles have a human touch that no commercial plastic can
replace. The chest Jim has made with durable ceramic tiles and natural wood will last
his granddaughter a lifetime. If treated with care, it may become a treasure for generations of McCauseys to come. Quality
materials are the stuff of family heirlooms.
Do You Work With Wood?
If you enjoy making wooden gifts for loved ones or for profit, take a cue from Jim McCausey. The vivid colors, excellent quality and tremendous variety
of designs featured in our ceramic tiles make them such exciting embellishments for special woodworking projects. A toy chest like Jim’s will do wonders
for keeping a child’s bedroom tidy, and that’s just the beginning of what you could do with a little creativity, good wood and great tiles!
What Can You Make?
How about a hope chest? The custom of giving a hope chest to a bride-to-be is a time honored one that shouldn’t be lost. The lady in question can carefully pack
her hope chest with quilts, linens, special towels and other posessions she is setting aside to beautify her future home. Our flower
tiles would add a lovely floral note to such a treasured feminine article and the finished chest will be fine
enough to become a focal piece of decor in the bride’s new home.
Cedar chests are another wonderful item for the home. The preservative quality of cedar wood helps keep linens and garments
fresh and moth-free. Our family has always so appreciated the benefits of
cedar wood that it has become our first choice for the furniture we sell here at Cape Cod Treasure Chest. If you’re a cedar fan, too, why not
start planning a handmade cedar chest, accented with some of our decorative tiles?
If you prefer smaller projects, making a jewelry chest will give you a splendid opportunity to use your woodworking skills for a really
fine and functional piece of decor. What woman doesn’t love having a place to keep her jewelry in order? Our tile designs are so varied,
they can be incorporated into a jewelry box that will fit almost any sense of style. Try
cat tiles for a kitty lover, safari tiles for someone wild and wonderful, or
butterfly tiles for someone with a real eye for beauty. You could pick a single tile for the lid of the jewelry chest, or mix and match
several small tiles as decorative elements on the sides.
Love jewelry boxes but couldn’t nail two pieces of wood together to save your life? Then check out our
ready-made tile jewelry boxes – all the pleasure with none of the
work!
We really enjoy the chance to share some of our smart customers’ projects with you. We hope seeing these projects will inspire the creative artist in you. Don’t miss
our recent feature on a mosaic bird bath designed by another talented
Cape Cod Treasure Chest customer. We are certain that Jim McCausey’s penguin toy chest will bring joy to his granddaughter and we hope it has given you a few
bright ideas of your own!
